Prase - from the Tamworth Region

Prase - a rare green stone from the Tamworth Region

Prase is a rare, fibrous variety of cryptocrystalline quartz which is most commonly a form of green chalcedony and coloured by minute inclusions of amphibole or chlorite. Its colour typically ranges from dusky sage to deep olive green, with some specimens showing slightly translucent zones or subtle veining that adds depth to their appearance.

In geological terms, Prase forms in low-temperature hydrothermal veins and is often associated with iron-rich or metamorphosed serpentinite host rocks. The Tamworth region, with its complex geological history and ancient volcanic systems, provides a fitting cradle for this earthy, enigmatic mineral.

Unlike more well-known green stones like jade or chrysoprase, Prase has a subtlety that appeals to those drawn to understated, organic aesthetics. Its matte to lightly polished finish gives it a natural, untouched appearance.

Historically, Prase has been mistaken for jade due to its fibrous texture and similar hues, but it stands on its own as a unique stone. Though not widely commercially mined, small-scale fossickers and collectors in New South Wales occasionally unearth fine specimens suitable for cabochons, pendants, or ornamental carvings.
