Australian Prehnite

Australia is renowned for its rich deposits of precious and semi-precious gemstones, from opals to sapphires. Among these treasures, Prehnite, a lesser-known but stunning mineral, is gaining popularity among collectors and jewellery enthusiasts. Found in various locations across the country, Australian Prehnite exhibits unique characteristics that make it a sought-after gemstone in the mineral world.

3fishstones Prehnite comes from the Northern Territory (NT) whcih has gem-quality nodules from the basalt tablelands around Wave Hill Station (Kalkarindji).

What is Prehnite?

Prehnite is a calcium aluminum silicate mineral with a distinctive translucent to opaque appearance. It is typically light green, but can also occur in shades of yellow, white, or even blue-green. Prehnite often forms in botryoidal (grape-like) or stalactitic structures, creating visually intriguing specimens. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5, can have encrustations and botryoidal formation and occurs in volcanic rocks.

It is strong enough to be cut into gemstones and until quite recently it was a rare collector's mineral, but new sources including Australia have made it more affordable.
